Nurse Mentor
The Uttar Pradesh Technical Support Unit(UP-TSU) aims to provide techno-managerial support to the Government of Uttar Pradesh to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and equity of delivery of key reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCH+A) services, with a focus on the designated delivery points in 25 high priority districts of the state.
Techno-managerial support will be provided at the facility community and health systems level to improve the availability, accessibility, quality, utilization and coverage of key RMNCH+A services. The support at the facility level is provided through onsite mentoring in delivery points to improve the quality of delivery and postpartum care, family planning and adolescent health services and the treatment of childhood illnesses, with the help of a new cadre of nurse mentors (NMs).
Being a new cadre, the UP-TSU has designed a training program and manuals for this cadre. The nurse mentors are expected to be proficient in clinical skills related to antenatal care, delivery and postpartum/newborn care, family planning. immunization, new born and infant nutrition, infant health and adolescent health and to have the right attitudes and abilities to provide mentorship to the facility staff.
One of their responsibilities is for onsite, on the job coaching and for facilitating change in provider practices that will ensure better quality care for women and children.
The purpose of this manual is to guide the nurse mentors of the UP-TSU in how to assist health care providers at delivery points in a Block to improve the quality of RMNCH+A services. This manual is meant to be used by nurse mentors during initial training and also as a guide during mentoring activities in the field.
This manual is divided into three volumes.
Volume 1
A general mentor guide
Section A - The Nurse Mentor's role in improving the availability of quality RMNCH+A services in Uttar Pradesh
This section introduces the context of the RMNCH+A mentoring by the UP-TSU, principles of quality improvement, UP-TSU's quality improvement approach and tools, and their use at various levels and qualities of an RMNCH+A Nurse Mentor.Section B - Health facility systems strengthening
This section contains technical information related to systems strengthening health facilities and covers infection prevention, referral system strengthening supply chain management, documentation and reporting systems (case sheets HMIS and UPHMIS).The appendix of Volume 1 includes various tools and reporting formats that the RMNCH A mentors use to plan, implement and report on the facility strengthening activities.
Volume 2
Mentoring skilled birth attendance and care during labour, delivery and postnatal periodsin service delivery points in Uttar Pradesh
This volume closely follows the UP-TSU's case sheet and safe childbirth checklist recommended by Gol and contains information related to clinical knowledge skills required to provide quality care during labour, delivery and the postnatal period. The section covers both provision of routine delivery and postnatal care a well as identification, management and referral of most common maternal complications during these periods. and
Volume 3
Newborn Care
This volume contains information related to clinical knowledge and skills required to provide quality care during the early neonatal period. The volume covers both provision of routine newborn care as well as identification, management and referral of most common newborn complications.
It is highly recommended that the mentors be familiar with information in all three volumes and consult the appropriate ones when preparing for a mentoring visit and have them available for ready reference during a mentoring visit.
